Welcome to a New Way of Thinking About Health.

The Blogʻs title, Health Science for Life, probably has a sedative quality. Oh gee, yet another website about health and what we have to do to remain relatively free of illness and disease.  If we took all the advice given by the web doctors, chiropractors, dieticians, and self-made nutritionists, we would be frenetic worrywarts and have little energy left for living.

There is so very much talk about our health care system, it's poor performance and the exorbitant costs. Critically, we need to ask, is it really a health care system or a disease treatment business?   As long as "Health Care" remains a huge cash cow and income diversion scheme, there will not be incentives to serve the public any other way.

The purpose of this Blog, Health Science for Life, is to flip that coin over and reveal the science behind health and wellness.  A second purpose is to show that wellness is not something that has to be attained, like running a marathon.  It is not something to be purchased. It is not the latest fad therapy or mystical diagnostic test.  Wellness is the natural state of being.  Our bodies expend enormous amounts of energy through vast control systems to assure our wellness.  The term that embodies this force is HOMEOSTASIS. It comes from the Greek words meaning, the Same and Steady.  This grand design for the Same and Steady is the Life Force.

Homeostasis practically speaking is actions our bodies mechanisms or physiology, in play as we speak, to assure the highest levels of vitality.  When we get to warm, immediately the blood vessels in the skin dilate and it so doing increase the rate of heat loss to the air.  When a splinter invades the skin a localized and necessary inflammatory response begins to eliminate or limit the bacterial infection that could ensue.  And when the blood concentration of CO2 (carbon dioxide) rises from even modest exercise, we are driven to breathe.  A complete list would read like a 450-page graduate school text on physiology.  The biology of homeostasis resides in every tissue and organ system in the human body!

Just the same the beneficiaries of disease treatment paradigm decry anyone or any product or service that is not part of the disease treatment industry.  Such a loud cry is heard from the proponents of FDA Approved Drugs.  For a product to claim it treats or otherwise manages a "specific disease" or modulates a "characteristic disease symptom, it must be FDA approved.  Today, that approval process takes years and millions of dollars for research data required by the FDA.

Make no mistake there are a significant number of dietary supplements that have much scientific substantiation for their use and many that are not well substantiated.  However, the collective voices of the pharmaceutical industry will state that all nutritional supplements are not tested, not approved and not safe.   It takes very little digging into the recent history of FDA approved drugs to discover many do not work well at all.  Many have unanticipated adverse side effects, and many have been the cause of patient deaths.  Thus the FDA Approval blessing can be an expensive ruse. Insiders with the courage to speak up within the industry/FDA so attest.  The mere fact that many in the industry have worked and will work in the FDA depicts a "revolving door" of remarkable suspicion.

The point is made, let us turn back to wellness.  The approach that makes for far more sense is the concept that food and nutritional aids are the major drivers of wellness homeostasis. Hippocrates (400 BCE)  said, "Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food."  In this context, food and medicine are interchangeable, whereas today the term medicine is something used to treat disease.

Hence we can see how our language context shifted to accommodate the economic disease treatment paradigm. Needed is the construction of a new framework and a new vocabulary of wellness.  That is exactly was this blog is about, and it is precisely what will be discussed and shared in postings to come.

In the meanwhile,  give consideration to "flipping the coin," and a disease term arises in conversations and text, attempt to look at the other side.
What is missing with the life force, the life force homeostasis?   If that something can be identified how would it be used to empower homeostasis to empower wellness to make it very resilient?
